As a donor milk feeding mom, I love that there is finally a film about this very important ( and taboo!) subject. While my infant was not born premature, he was born with birth defects which required him to be G-tube fed and it was very difficult for me to produce milk during that stressful period, even though I pumped as recommended. When he was in the hospital for one of his few surgeries, I asked about the human milk bank downstairs and was told that the milk there only went to the sickest of the NICU babies and my infant was not sick enough to receive milk from the bank. I then asked if I would be able to bring donor milk from a friend. I got another no.
If only more mothers knew they could donate their surplus milk!
Personally, I am a fan of mom to mom milk sharing, leaving out the middle man that is a human milk bank. But I do believe in equality. If hospitals are going to help sick babies, they should be able to help ALL of them and they need donors to provide the gift of their milk.
Luckily for my little one we had some amazing mamas on our side who share their milk with him and he is doing so much better now.
This film shares the stories of donors and recipients alike. Some of their stories are heart breaking but all are amazing and inspiring tales of their milk sharing experiences. I cant wait until it comes out on DVD! For those of you in Houston, Texas:
